How to Make Your Own Lightsaber – Background
As you may or may not know, May 4th is international “May the Fourth Be With You” STAR WARS day. To commemorate this day, my son and I were invited to a special STAR WARS party. This is the first time we had been to a Star Wars party, and it was much fun. They had an awesome craft station at the party where the kids could make their own light sabers to fight with. The kids had so much fun making the lightsabers and beating each other in the head relentlessly with them!! It was fantastic! After it got dark we all sat down and watched Return of the Jedi on a big DIY outdoor screen.
How to Make Your Own Lightsaber – Materials
Here’s all the materials you will need to make your own lightsaber – you probably have most of these just laying around the house:
- A pool noodle (can purchase from the Dollar Tree for $1)
- A knife (bread knives work awesome)
- Roll of duct tape
- Roll of electrical tape
- Scissors (for cutting the tape)
How to Make Your Own Lightsaber – Steps
I was so impressed with the idea of the DIY kids lightsabers I learned about at the Star Wars party that I thought I would share here for anyone interested.
Steps for How to Make Your Own Lightsaber:
- Get the pool noodle out and ready.
- Cut the pool noodle in half using a bread knife or other sharp knife. Scissors don’t really work all that well.
- Cut some strips of grey duct tape and wind the strips along the bottom of the pool noodle to form a handle.
- (Optional) Using electrical tape, make some strips of black stripes at the top of the handle.
- (Optional) Using electrical tape, make other buttons and gizmos on the handle.
- Take pool noodle lightsaber and beat kids, friends, and family with the soft, playful lightsaber!
How to Make Your Own Lightsaber – Final Thoughts
If you follow these steps on how to make your own lightsaber, you’ll save yourself a ton of money! Your new custom-made lightsaber will also be much safer and lighter than the plastic ones in the store. Those plastic lightsabers can really hurt if you get whacked with them in the wrong place by kids 🙂
