As I’ve referenced a bunch of times in the past, my mother-in-law started her own thrift store a little more than a year ago. Business for her has been going pretty good, but she’s looking to draw in more customers from the surrounding area that have yet to hear of her richmond thrift shop.
Make Money by Helping Out Your Family – What’s Your Specialty
So, where can I help out? Well, during our normal course of yard sales, we are always finding awesome deals that she can flip for 400%+ profit. That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t help her with the primary issue of finding new customers.
So, where do I fit in? I have a knack at creating websites. I’ve had this hobby off and on for the past 16 years. With my recent forays here on MoneyAhoy.com, I’ve gotten pretty good at html and css. Since I’ve improved my website building and WordPress skills over the past couple of months, I’m in a great position to give her a helping hand!
Make Money by Helping Out Your Family – Getting Started
So, I’ve been talking to her for months about working with her to start up her very own website, but she’s always been hesitant about making the jump. With my new drive to work on making money, I’ve made it a recent point to sit down with her and iron out all the details. I’ve registered a site for her to help us both get over the motivational hump and get started.
Make Money by Helping Out Your Family – So, What’s in it for Me?
Helping out your family doesn’t always have to involve making money. But, if you can identify a win-win type of scenario where you can help them and make money at the save time, then why not take the bull by the horns, right? Help her out with the website isn’t going to be some kinda of get rich quick scheme or anything.
My thinking is that I can include links from her thrift store website to my Chamberlain Global, LLC website and the MoneyAhoy site. This will help in a small way with my search engine optimization. Also, I’m hoping to include small AdSense ads on her site that can help monetize local area visitors that will come across her site. This will hopefully be enough to cover the hosting costs and domain registration fees. In the end, I may see a couple of extra dollars a month, but I have a strong feeling that it can increase her revenues by several thousands of dollars a month!
If you’d like to check out the website I’ve created for her (it’s currently a work in progress) head over here and let me know what you think: Richmond Thrift Store !
Make Money by Helping Out Your Family – Final Thoughts
There are tons of ways that all of us can make money by helping out our family. If anyone in your family runs their own business, there may be many ways that you can help out by using your natural born skills to help improve the family business. In many cases, you can kill two birds with one stone by helping out your family and finding a creative way that you can make money by helping out your family at the same time.
Does anyone out there have an example of how they were able to make money by helping out your family?

I’ve used my skills to help out family members (computer repair, making large amounts of BBQ for family outings), but I never expect to be paid for it. Although sometimes helping out a family member with your skills can help you think of an idea you could use to make money. For instance, by making food for family outings, someone suggested I should start a BBQ catering business. That thought has been rolling around in my head a lot lately. 🙂

Brock,
I don’t really expect to get paid for helping either, but if you can identify a win-win solution, then I say you should go with it 🙂 In my case, it’s one more website I can add to my resume. In your case, you get more practice and experience cooking and working the BBQ angle. I think the catering business is a great side hustle that you could pull off on the weekends for weddings and such. You should check into it!

When I was in middle school, I dabble a little bit in HTML and CSS and built a personal website for fun. I’ve since forgotten mostly everything. How I wish I retained all of that knowledge!

Lisa,
Yeah, if you don’t use it you lose it! But, it does come back pretty quickly if you jump head first into it. HTML/CSS really isn’t all that hard – I usually get stuck on the real simple things though…

This article reminded me how easy it has become to make money on-line and this can help those businesses that are struggling. Having an on-line presence is become vital for the small business owner.

Sharon,
Exactly! The barriers to entry are so low, and there is still a lot of money to be made in on-line business. Current brick-and-mortar businesses would be foolish to overlook this inexpensive option to increase exposure!
